Long a hidden treasure in Boston recording circles as a freelance recording engineer and a trusted electronics fix-it man, Kevin Micka has approached Animal Hospital over the last 9 years in the nooks and crannies of his schedule.
During performances, Micka buries himself in a pile of electronics-shelves of effects, mixing consoles, amps and delay units-while patiently constructing a layered nest of loops consisting of live drum beats, guitar chords, scrapes, chucks, chimes, and melodies resulting in anything from more conventional songs to meticulously crafted ambient movements on to full on improvisation. Since the winter of 2011, a large ensemble version of his music has been realized with performances consisting of up to 30 musicians at times.
To date, Animal Hospital has released 3 studio albums on Mister Records, Mutable Sound and Barge Recordings.
Kevin has consistently toured the world (recently Japan, Australia and South America) winning followers from all corners of the music world, including spots with acts as diverse as The Jesus Lizard, Beirut, No Age, MAIN, Thrones, Dosh, Os Mutantes and Codeine.
He’ll be sharing the stage at the Middle East on 10/17 with The Field Effect, Township, White Dynomite, TRiPLE THiCK and host D-Tension at Crash Safely this year, and if you haven’t had a chance to see Animal Hospital live yet, prepare to be mesmerized!

Have you seen the latest posters from Nicole Anguish at Daykamp Creative? Check ’em all out above!
We’re obviously big fans of cats. If you head to the Crash Safely Instagram, you’ll see I’m not joking about that. It’s possibly comprised of 75-80% cat photos. Soon, you’ll be seeing these kittehs* all over town. Come up with creative names for them! There may or may not be a prize in it for you for best cat name.
What do you mean “may?”
Speaking of prizes, Gibson started my morning off with a bit of a surprise. I just happened to be home this morning when FedEx came around. I wasn’t expecting anything, so I must have looked like I won the lottery when the delivery driver handed me this:
Well, the box that had this in it.
He was excited. You’d think it was his guitar, he was so happy! “That’s a great one,” he said, “beautiful color. Enjoy! Happy 4th!”
I did request a donation from Gibson, but I wasn’t expecting to hear back from them for a while. I’ll take a surprise Les Paul delivery as confirmation that they want to help out! You’ll be able to bid on this beauty as the silent auctions are announced, and we’re planning on having this be something that will be picked up at one of the shows, so if you’re the lucky winner, you can start playing it immediately. You could also take it with you to your studio time winnings as well, which we also keep adding to the list of winnable things.
*I know that's not how it's spelled. It's cute.
If you head to the main page, you’ll see photos of (almost) everyone involved in Crash Safely this year. What you don’t see, however, are the dates and lineups. Where would you find that info? Maybe even some ticket links, because you want to be sure to be there?
Wait for it…
Right here.

We’ve spaced out the shows more this year, and two of them actually happen after the bikeMS ride in NYC. Why’s that? I realized that we don’t have to get our donations all in on the day of the ride, and October worked out nicely for these shows. Awesome posters are on the way from Daykamp Creative as well.
Also new for this year: vacation-type prizes in silent auction! I figure by October, we’ll all be yearning for 90 degree weather, so a 5-day stint in Cancun for two might be a sought after prize. There’s a hot date you can win as a mini-staycation, with a dinner cruise for two on the Odyssey and a hotel to stay in afterwards. Lots of studio time as always, and lots more fun things coming in every day.
